This Friday, Facebook said it will suspend the former President’s accounts including Instagram for two years until January 2023. The company’s announcement comes after the independent Facebook Oversight Board upheld the company’s suspension of the ex-U.S. president after Trump praised people engaged in violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 — but required Facebook to review its decision and policies.

They made the official decision after concluding that he [allegedly] stoked violence ahead of the deadly Jan.6 insurrection. They noted that it will only be reinstated “if conditions permit.” Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president of global affairs, wrote in a blog post Friday,
“We are today announcing new enforcement protocols to be applied in exceptional cases such as this, and we are confirming the time-bound penalty consistent with those protocols which we are applying to Mr. Trump’s accounts.”

Clegg continued, “Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr. Trump’s suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols. We are suspending his accounts for two years, effective from the date of the initial suspension on January 7 this year.”
