Boston Gets Its First Black And First Female Mayor, Kim Janey!

Kim Janey is making history in Boston!

She became the first woman and first Black person to serve as Boston’s mayor. This happened after the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Mayor Marty Walsh’s nomination to serve as Secretary of Labor on Monday, making Janey the 55th mayor of Boston; shortly after Walsh’s resignation went into effect at 9 p.m. She will be officially sworn in on March 24, according to the city.

Miss Janey spoke about her historic role in a Boston Globe op-ed saying, “I come to this day with life experiences different from the men who came before me.” Janey, who was City Council president said earlier Monday evening, “History will be made tonight. We’re an extremely diverse city from different backgrounds and different nationalities and different skin colors. I think it’s a good thing for our city. I think it’s a great thing for our city.”

Janey will serve as acting mayor until the November election. She hasn’t said if she plans to seek a full term.
