Border Patrol Agents Fatally Shoot Tribal Member Who Called To Remove Migrants From His Property
Family members of a man named Raymond Mattia, who is a Tohono O’odham Nation member, said he called Border Patrol because he was needing help in removing migrants who trespassed onto his property. However, upon their arrival, the man was fatally shot by the same government organization he had called on for help.
Officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that on Thursday (May 18), around 10 p.m., agents from the Ajo Border Patrol Station were involved in a fatal shooting on the Tohono O’odham reservation near Ajo.

Furthermore, officials have revealed that the incident is currently under review by Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility; however, additional information has not yet been released. Included in the details that have not yet been released is the reason for why the tribal member was shot and killed.
What is known is that the man who was fatally shot was a tribal member, and his family further noted that when he saw agents walking onto his property, he stepped outside and was soon shot. They said he was hit just two feet away from his door, and now they want answers.
It is also reported that the chairman of Mattia’s tribe, Ned Norris Jr., has released a statement on the incident. On Sunday (May 21), Norris Jr. revealed the name of the tribal member and said that the incident occurred in the Meneger’s Dam community of the Tohono O’odham Nation.
Norris Jr. stated, “Nation member Raymond Mattia lost his life in the incident. Our hearts go out to his family and all those impacted during this difficult time. As the investigation proceeds, the Nation expects full consideration of all related facts of the incident and an appropriate and expeditious response from relevant public safety agencies. Because the investigation is ongoing, we will refrain from making further comment at this time.”
As mentioned previously, the tribal member (Raymond Mattia), had once called U.S. Border Patrol agents to his home because he had learned that several migrants had trespassed onto his property and into his yard. It is reported that Mattia’s home, within Meneger’s Dam, is just a few miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.
