#Socialites The first Juneteenth comedy is out and already has a lot of fans talking! Block Party is an extremely funny movie about a Harvard graduate who puts her career on pause in an attempt to save her grandmothers historic Juneteenth block party! The film was created and produced by Lisa Mathis and the movie has some big actors/actresses starring in it as well!
Hollywood Unlocked got a chance to speak with a few of the cast members at the premiere of the movie in Los Angeles, CA. It was such an honor to speak with The Color Purple star, Margaret Avery who explained how she grew up doing comedy beside the icon, Richard Pryor. She said she learned so much from him and now getting a chance to get back in the comedy field she said people will look at the film and say, “Whew! Shug is doing it!” In reference to her breakout role as Shug Avery in the 1985 drama film The Color Purple for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. She went on to explain that this is the first comedy opportunity she’s been apart of since working with Richard Pryor. “What makes this film unique is that it was African American women that brought it together. And I’m also one of the executive producers of it and that’s a big thing for me.” She also revealed that she has another film coming soon that she also executive produced!
Now if your  fan of comedy and you like movies such as Think Like A Man or School Dance then you know the super talented comedian, Luenell! While speaking with comedian at the premiere, we had to ask how she continues to stay so unapologetically black while being apart of these major Hollywood films. “I just can’t be fake. I’m not trying to do anything other than be myself. I just cant stand fake people and ill call you out.” She said.  “I think if I were to change it anyway the people that been following me for a long time they would notice right away and I have a big family and they’re not going for it!”Â
The chemistry between those two stars off camera was so amazing to see in person and that same chemistry transpires on screen as well! From the cast to the producers and directors, Hollywood Unlocked can truly say, they understood the assignment when creating this movie! The Juneteenth comedy, Block Party was released in theaters on June 8th, but has been picked up by BET+ starting June 16th so make sure you sit down with your family and get prepared to literally laugh your a** off!
