Black Lives Matter started in 2013 amid the death of Trayvon Martin and increased further after Micheal Brown was killed in Ferguson, Missouri. It also received criticism as the peaceful protests have attracted outsiders to cause riots and looting in surrounding buildings.

“Of course there have been incidents, but most of them have been caused by the activities of either the police or counter-protestors,” said Eide. The submission of nominees will end on Feb.1 and a winner will be announced in October.
