Biden Administration To Restart Donald Trump’s ‘Remain In Mexico’ Policy In November

Next month, the Biden administration will plan the restart of a Trump-era policy that forces migrants seeking asylum to wait in Mexico for their U.S. immigration court hearings, according to a court filing late Thursday.

The Justice Department had initially asked the court to suspend the program, saying MPP “has been formally suspended for seven months and largely dormant for nearly nine months before that.” However, the Supreme Court sided with a ruling from a federal judge in Texas, which said the Biden administration failed to consider several critical factors before officially terminating the program in June.

About 70,000 asylum-seekers have been subject to the “Remain in Mexico” policy, known officially as “Migrant Protection Protocols,” which President Donald Trump introduced back in January 2019. On Biden’s first day in office, he suspended the policy before ultimately terminating it later on.

To note, the Biden administration is not able to restart the program without the consent of the Mexican government. However, the Department Of Homeland Security said that it is in communication with Mexican officials to address when and how the program will be reimplemented.
