If you were on Twitter last night, you would have probably seen Beyonce trending, after fans mistakenly confused her with actress Laverne Cox at the US Open. The “Heated” singer has actually been enjoying some time off with her family in Croatia after dropping her highly-anticipated album “Renaissance” last month.
But that didn’t stop fans from falsely claiming Bey was in attendance at the hardcourt tennis tournament, with some of those tweets gaining as much as 70,000 likes. The cameramen caught Cox seated in the stands at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York wearing a face mask while sporting a black sheer top, hoop earrings, and brown leather pants. Fans later learned that Beyonce wasn’t at the US Open after all when Cox uploaded a video of herself onto Instagram in the attire she wore to the event.

She included Bey’s song “PURE/HONEY” and captioned the post, writing, “Not me getting mistaken for @Beyonce at the #USOpen tonight then trending on Twitter as the internet cackles over the mistaken identity. These tweets are funny as hell. Enjoy!!!” One fan reacted in shock, tweeting, “Wtf. I know Laverne Cox be LIVING when y’all call her Beyonce lmaooo she nailed the look though, I really thought that was Bey,” while another person chimed in, “I’m weak at y’all thinking Laverne Cox was Bey lmao I know Laverne is going to love that lmao.”
Some of the other tweets included someone writing, “I know Laverne Cox is cocky as hell right now and should be cuz if I got mistaken for Beyonce on national television I would never shut up.”
A fourth person added, “I know you’ve received a lot of accolades, but surely being mistaken for Beyoncé is up there!! So Laverne Cox & Beyoncé need to go ahead and do a beautiful liar remix video becauseeeee.”

Elsewhere, Cox made history back in May when she was honored to become the first trans star to have her very own Barbie doll. Toy brand Mattel created the doll to celebrate the actress’ impact as an active advocate for LGBTQ rights.
Speaking of the incredible feat, she said, “It’s been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my own doll. I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection. I hope that people can look at this Barbie and dream big like I have in my career.”
