Bacardi Rum Making Hand Sanitizer To Combat Coronavirus

It looks like Bacardi Rum is moving into the health industry as they’ve now begun production on hand sanitizer; in an effort to combat the novel coronavirus.

At its Olein Refinery plant in Puerto Rico, the Rum brand is pumping out ethanol to create 1.7 million 10 oz. bottles of sanitizer, to donate to nursers, police, non-profits and others who are first in line to combat the virus.

Since being founded in 1936, Jose Class, VP of supply chain and manufacturing in Latin America and the Caribbean, says a shift like this is unprecedented. He adds, “I don’t think we even did something like this during World War II.”

It’s noted that across its 127-acre complex in Cataño, on the northern coast of Puerto Rico, the plant pumps out 80 percent of Bacardi’s rum; which equates to about 200 million bottles a year.

Subsequent to the shift in Puerto Rico, other locations are looking to jump aboard the sanitizer train, like the Bacardi Bottling Corporation in North Jacksonville, Fl; which announced they’d begun pumping out 120,000 units of sanitizers this week to be donated.

In six other countries, eight other plants are joining in as well.
