An Atlanta woman is speaking out for the first time after filing a lawsuit against Popeyes and some of their employees after workers allegedly ripped her braid out of her head.

Last September Denetra Dawson claims she visited a Popeyes location on Cleveland Avenue to get dinner for her kids, but unfortunately, the employees got her order wrong so she had to turn around and go back through the drive-through to get her order fixed. Dawson claims once she pulled up to the window the employees began to yell at her because she was holding up the drive-through line. That’s when one of the employees came outside to confront Dawson and opened up her car door and allegedly started to attack her. Dawson says the attack was so brutal the employee ripped her braid out of her scalp which left her with a huge bald spot in her head.

“They recovered and saw her braid that they ripped out and said we ripped that ‘B’s’ hair out of her head,” attorney Mawuli Davis said. “It took my identity. I took pride in my hair,” Dawson said. “I didn’t even think I was going to make it back to my kids.” Police identified the three employees involved in the brutal attack as manager Tenister Evans and her sister and daughter. The other two employees have not been identified.

A representative for Popeye’s Restaurants released a statement that read:

“We have absolutely no tolerance for violence of any kind in Popeyes restaurants. The franchisee of this restaurant confirmed the incident took place in September 2022, and the employees involved were immediately terminated. We cannot share any additional details as there is an active lawsuit related to this incident.”

All three women were charged with battery, but Evans received an additional charge of obstruction of an officer. “I just pray that what happened to me doesn’t happen to anyone else and that I get justice,” Dawson said.
