Welp, A’s broadcaster Glen Kuiper has a lot of time to think about his actions now that he has been fired for saying the n-word on air.
As we previously reported, during the pregame of Oakland’s May 5th match against the Kansas City Royals, Kuiper described a trip to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, MO, with colleague Dallas Braden. While recapping on air, Kuiper appeared to use the N-word when referring to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. He said, “We had a phenomenal day today. (N***er) League Museum and Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque…” When he returned from the commercial break, he immediately addressed his slip-up. “Welcome back to Kauffman Stadium. I just wanted to … a little bit earlier in the show, I said something, didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to,” Kuiper said. “And I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I meant it to be said. And like I said, I just wanted to apologize for that.”
In a statement, the A’s called Kuiper’s pregame language “unacceptable.” The statement read, “The Oakland Athletics do not condone such language. We are working to address the situation.” Kuiper issued another public apology shortly after saying, “I could not be more sorry and horrified by what I said,” Kuiper said in a statement released by NBC Sports California. “I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies.” Following a suspension, the network decided to terminate him this Monday.”
“Following an internal review, the decision has been made for NBC Sports California to end its relationship with Glen Kuiper, effective immediately,” an NBC Sports California spokesperson told CNN. “We thank Glen for his dedication to Bay Area baseball over the years.”

Clearly, this sucks for Kuiper who was in his 20th season as the Athletics’ lead voice and had covered Bay Area baseball since 1992 for NBC Sports California. But hopefully this will be a teachable moment for him.
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum president Bob Kendrick has since reacted to the news of Kuiper’s slip-up” in a Twitter statement:
“I’m aware of the unfortunate slur made by Glen Kuiper,” Kendrick said on May 6. “I welcomed Glen to the NLBM yesterday and know he was genuinely excited to be here. The word is painful and has no place in our society. And while I don’t pretend to know Glen’s heart I do know that my heart is one of forgiveness. I hope all of all you find it in yourselves to do the same!”
