Angela Bassett Reveals She Is Proud Of Her Son, 16, For Issuing An Apology For Participating In Viral Death Hoax TikTok Trend: “We All Make Mistakes”

While speaking with ET at the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Creative Impact Awards, Angela Bassett revealed she is proud of her son, Slater, for issuing a public apology for participating in a distasteful TikTok trend.

As we previously reported, the 16-year-old participated in the viral trend which involves tricking a family member into believing their favorite celebrity died. Slater had told his mother his mother and father, Courtney B. Vance, that Michael B. Jordan had passed away. The TikTok pranks have sparked a heavy wave of backlash online and even the youngster got hit with criticism.

However, unlike some TikTokers, Slater
made another video to apologize. The 64-year-old actress praised her teen for holding himself accountable for his actions. “We all make mistakes, own up to them, take responsibility. and then hold your head up and move forward,” she told the news outlet.

The well-respected actress went on to say that the trend is “harmful.” However, she added that it was a “teachable lesson” for her child.

As we previously reported, after removing the video from his account, Slater shared a lengthy apology, stating, “I would sincerely like to apologize for taking part in such a harmful trend.” He continued in his video, “I apologize to Michael B. Jordan’s entire family, his extended family and Michael directly as he is an idol of mine and taking part in a trend like this is completely disrespectful,” he said.

Before concluding he went on to say how he doesn’t wish for people to put his famous family in a negative light:

“I don’t wish any bad ramifications of my actions upon his family nor my parents as they deserve none of the backlash,” the teen said. “I own this was a mistake and I hope this can be a teaching lesson to anyone else who uses social media as a tool and a source of entertainment to truly understand that your actions can have consequences that extend beyond you.”

“I apologize for any hurt that my actions might have caused Mr. Jordan or my parents or anyone else who could have been involved in this, and I am truly, truly and sincerely sorry.”
