Alicia Keys didn’t seem all that impressed by Swizz Beatz when he showed up late to their first date, the singer has recalled in a new interview. While the doting couple has been married for 11 years and share two children, their fate may have turned out differently had Alicia not been able to overlook her husband’s tardiness when they agreed to have lunch together.
During her recent appearance on the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast, the City of Gods vocalist looked back on how her first date with Swizz didn’t go according to plan as she showed up for the occasion and was left waiting because the Ruff Ryders’ Anthem producer was nowhere to be found. “We connect for lunch and we get there and I only have like 45 minutes, I didn’t have a lot of time….I get there, and guess who’s not there,” Alicia explained. She admitted to second-guessing her decision to come out for lunch with Swizz, mainly because she had made time for him before her pre-arranged meeting less than an hour later.
“So I’m like you see…I knew he was this dude. I don’t even know why I’m here, I don’t even know why I’m sitting here.” Alicia added that once Swizz did finally show up, she was in a bad mood — so much that even the gift he bought her wasn’t going to lighten the mood after being made to wait for him on their first date. “He comes in and he says he apologizes for being late, I’m already funky….So he hands me a bag with some Louis Vuitton Millionaires in it…. I didn’t like that sh*t.” But upon inspecting the detail and design of the bag, Alicia said she was intrigued by one of the artists’ names engraved on the fashion accessory, which sparked an engaging conversation between the two.
When the two later finished lunch, Swizz escorted Alicia to her car, where she found a huge painting on top of the vehicle. “It’s a painting with the piano keys and on top of the keys is a paintbrush. And it’s wrapped in purple which is my favorite color and he said, ‘This is the reason I was late. ‘I was trying to bring you a gift and I couldn’t get on top of the car so it could be good when you got there’….At that point I was like alright I guess he’s cool…I guess he’s alright.
