During a recent appearance on Big Boy’s Neighborhood, Akon revealed that he’s exploring the idea of launching a company focused on hairpieces.
The singer spoke candidly about his personal hair-care journey and how it inspired him to look into the business side of the industry. Back in 2022, Akon underwent a hair transplant procedure in Turkey. He shared that the procedure cost him $7,500.
From Hair Transplant to Hair Pieces
Akon explained that after cutting his hair, he began using a hairpiece. He broke down how the process works. “But the difference is you cut your hair bald, but you leave the sides open. The area where you are losing hair, they replace it with a piece.”
He added that once the hairpiece is installed and trimmed, it looks good within a few days. However, maintenance is key. He noted that regular barber visits are required for touch-ups to keep it looking natural. According to Complex, Akon also mentioned that hairpieces can cost up to $2,000.
He said he initially started cutting his hair because he noticed balding at the crown.
Akon on Balding and Insecurit
Beyond the business angle, Akon also spoke about insecurity among men dealing with hair loss.
“I think people be so insecure with themselves to the point where they have to feel like they got to hide it. But there’s nothing really bad about it. I mean, you’re getting older,” he said.
Then he added a line that probably made a few VIP sections nervous:
“Half the guys in the in the VIP section, I would say out of 10 of them, seven of them got wigs on.”
