Stephen “Steve” Bannon, American media executive and former chief strategist and senior adviser to President Donald Trump, is now pushing him into retaliating against former head of DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) Elon Musk by seizing SpaceX and deporting the South African billionaire.
Steve Bannon and Elon Musk’s feud intensified on Tuesday (June 10) after Bannon suggested that Donald Trump should rethink signing government contracts with Musk’s companies, and instead appoint a special counsel to investigate the billionaire’s alleged drug use. Bannon, who served in Trump’s first administration, has a history of going bucking horns with Musk, who recently departed Trump’s second administration.
According to Bannon, Musk should be fired after threatening to decommission one of the rockets his company uses in its work with the federal government, this following his public spat with Donald Trump. Bannon believes if it were any other CEO who did that, they would terminated, and so should Musk.
Bannon said, “I think the best way to do it is as a special counsel that can kind of oversee everything. Pull his security clearance for the drugs, temporarily, investigate the whole drug situation.”
According to a May 2025 report by The New York Times, Elon Musk was “using drugs far more intensely than previously known” while campaigning for Donald Trump. His alleged substance abuse reportedly included Ketamine, Ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and pills that appeared to be the ADHD stimulant Adderall.

Elon Musk has since fired back at Steve Bannon taking to his platform X. He replied to comments Bannon made on the debut episode of the “Sunday Night With Chuck Todd” streaming series. Bannon suggested that Musk has government contracts to thank for adding as much as $150 billion to his net worth. He also suggested that American taxpayers should therefore own a share of his SpaceX company. Musk fired off:
“Bannon is such a retarded liar. Dumber than a doorstop. SpaceX revenue this year will be $15.5B and NASA is only $1.1B. For that NASA revenue, SpaceX does all astronaut transport to the Space Station at roughly half the cost of Boeing, who thus far has failed to complete a single astronaut back and had to be rescued by SpaceX! It wasn’t some ‘gift.’ If Bannon’s dumb as f**k reasoning made any sense, then anyone who bought products from any company would automatically own that company. Bannon is truly peak retard.”
