A Florida mother got the best news of her life while standing in front of TV cameras. Her son, Benjamin Adcock, a 16-year-old from St. Augustine who has autism, went missing on Saturday. For two days, his family, local deputies, and volunteers searched everywhere trying to bring him home safe.
By Monday, St. John’s County Sheriff Rob Hardwick called a news conference to give an update on the search. Cameras were rolling, reporters were listening, and Benjamin’s mom stood right there next to the sheriff, holding on to hope. Then, right in the middle of his update, somebody in the crowd rushed up and whispered something in the sheriff’s ear.
Hardwick’s face changed instantly. “Oh my goodness, gracious!” he said, turning straight to Benjamin’s mother. She looked taken aback as he wrapped her in a hug as the news landed: her son had been found safe. All she could say back was “Praise the Lord.”
According to deputies, a good Samaritan is the real hero of this story. That person spotted Benjamin out in public and recognized him from a photo that had been circulating on social media. They made the call to police, and it led officers straight to him. The teenager was found in good health and is now getting medical care, according to the sheriff’s office.
What’s touching people the most is what happened right before the cameras started rolling. Hardwick shared that a group of volunteer searchers had gathered with deputies and Benjamin’s mom to pray together before the update. She told the sheriff she believed it was that prayer that brought her son home. Hardwick agreed, saying things happen in life for a reason.
Sheriff Hardwick also gave credit to the media for helping get the word out fast, showing that when everybody works together, law enforcement, neighbors, and the press, families can get the outcome they’re praying for.
