The Menendez brothers are one step closer to freedom. In a major development on Monday morning, a family spokesperson confirmed that the California Board of Parole has granted Erik and Lyle Menendez an early parole suitability hearing, moving their next chance for release up from August 2028 to March 2027.

The news has brought “immeasurable joy” to their loved ones, who have long advocated for the brothers’ release. In a statement, the family emphasized how proud they are of the men Lyle, 58, and Erik, 55, have become during their nearly four decades behind bars.

“They have worked to take responsibility for their actions, confront and heal from the unimaginable abuse and trauma they endured, grow as individuals and dedicate themselves to serving others,” the spokesperson shared. The statement also highlighted the brothers’ positive contributions to the prison environment, noting their work in establishing a hospice program and creating “Green Space” to help fellow inmates find meaning and value in their lives.

The brothers were originally sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. After years of denied appeals, their case took a dramatic turn in 2024 when then-Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón supported their resentencing. Although his successor, Nathan Hochman, opposed the move, the brothers were ultimately resentenced to 50-years-to-life in May 2025, which made them eligible for parole under California’s youthful offender law.

They were previously denied parole in August 2025, but this new decision provides a significant glimmer of hope. “Today’s decision is especially meaningful and brings us immeasurable joy as we move one step closer to a future with them that once seemed impossible,” the family statement concluded.
