On Tuesday (September 19), the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing shortly before 11 p.m. The call led police to the Days Inn hotel in the 8300 block of Craig Street in Castleton.

When officers arrived at the scene of the crime, investigators found a 1-year-old girl stabbed in the neck. Sometime after their discovery, police located the suspect hiding out near a bush outside of the hotel. Police subsequently arrested the suspect, who has since been identified as the toddler’s 32-year-old aunt, Sharon Key.

She was arrested for criminal recklessness, with formal charges still pending. However, the initial charge, a low-level felony, carries a sentence of 6 months to 2-and-a-half years in prison. Elsewhere, it is reported that Key has been in and out of jail more than 20 times over the last decade.

Upon being taken into custody and booked into jail in the latest incident, police reports say Key tearfully confessed to the crime. Key reportedly admitted to mistakenly stabbing her 1-year-old niece while trying to instead attack her dog who stole and ate her chicken sandwich.

Before the stabbing, Key said that she along with the child and her mother went to Burger King to pick up some food and then returned to the hotel. While eating their food, Key claimed her pit bull dog ate her chicken sandwich, so she got upset and chased the dog around the room with a knife.

As the dog hopped onto the bed where the child was lying down, Key tried to stab the dog but missed and stabbed her niece by mistake. Investigators said the mother of the child, who was in the room at the time of the incident, was the person who called 911.

The victim’s grandfather, Tracy Griffin, spoke out on Key and said, “I want her to be accountable for this. It’s stupid, and at the same time, she’s a grown-up. She should have known that baby was sitting right there. I want the book thrown at her. My granddaughter will be scarred for the rest of her life.”

Griffin also updated the media on his granddaughter’s condition and said that the child is expected to survive from her injuries sustained. She was taken to Riley Children’s Hospital, where she received several stitches to her ear and neck.
