Last week, we shared a clip of singer and actor Marques Houston opening up about his controversial marriage with wife, Miya Dickey — with whom he has a 19-year age gap. He’s continued to catch backlash ever since it was learned that they were dating, and he’s again addressing the critics, adding, “She keeps me young and fresh.”

Marques Houston Addresses Continued Backlash On His 19-Year Age Gap With Wife: She Keeps Me Young And Fresh
As mentioned, Houston and Miya first became a hot topic when they first began dating and then when they decided to tie the knot back in 2020 — after it was reported that they had met when Miya was just 17 years old.
The couple then welcomed their first child in December 2021. Houston popped back up in headlines as of April 2023, after a promotional clip for his upcoming episode of TVOne’s ‘Uncensored,’ surfaced online.

In the clip, the 41-year-old singer addressed their age gap and broke down the details of how he met his wife. He clarified that neither one of them had pursued a romantic relationship until she turned 18 years old.
He said, “Me and my wife’s situation is a little different. How we met through mutual friends and everything like that. When I met my wife, she was 17. So, no [real] conversation… no [real] connection until, you know, she was of age. People don’t understand it and I got a lot of backlash for marrying someone that was 19.
When we did finally start to talk I was like, ‘This woman is like me,’ and when I would talk to her she’d just… For one, we had a spiritual connection and I feel like that’s the most important thing. We both love God. We both love Jehovah and that was key.”

Since that clip went viral, Houston was tracked down by ’TMZ,’ who asked if it bothers him how the internet continues to speak on his marriage.
He replies, “Absolutely not.” Further explaining why he believes he is unbothered, Houston adds, “You know, you’ve got to think about it. Everybody has their own opinion. Opinions are like noses, everybody has one. I’m the kind of person that doesn’t really care about what people say about me. So, say what you want. I’m happily married. I love my wife, we have a beautiful daughter, and that’s how we’re living.”
Houston goes on to “set the record straight” about claims that he met his wife young and married her young. He explains he doesn’t care about the critics, because he’s happy and being kept young and fresh.
The musician and actor explains, “So, yeah. She was 19 when we got married. She was 18 when we started dating. So, you know there’s a lot of misconception out there. A lot of people tried to twist her age online and make it seem like she was born a year earlier, but she wasn’t. She’s 22, going on 23. And she keeps me young and fresh. We have a love that people don’t really understand and I don’t really care to explain it. That’s what it is.”
