A man was reportedly shot in the head by Islamic Regime security forces after celebrating Iran’s defeat in their World Cup soccer match against the USA on Tuesday. According to reports, 27-year-old Mehran Samak was driving in the city of Anzali when he began to honk his car repeatedly to commemorate Iran’s loss after the game. He was in the vehicle with his fiancée when a security force official approached him and suddenly shot him in the head.

Despite desperate attempts to treat Mehran for his injury at a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead an hour later. Mehran wasn’t the only one who was praising his country’s loss in the World Cup, after being joined by fellow Iranians who chanted in satisfaction with the game’s end result. Countless videos of people celebrating in different parts of Iran have widely circulated on Twitter.

Many people were in favor of Iran losing the World Cup match over the ongoing nationwide protests that have erupted since September following the death of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old suddenly died shortly after her arrest in Tehran for not wearing her hijab accordingly. Law enforcement officials told her family she suffered from a heart attack, which they refuse to believe.

Many Iranians have held protests with signs that read “Death to the dictator,” referring to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as they hold him responsible for the senseless murders that have been occurring more frequently than ever before since September.

“Iran is a country where people are very passionate about football. Now they are out in the streets in the city of Sanandaj & celebrate the loss of their football team against US,” one person wrote on Twitter to clarify to those who were confused as to why Iran was celebrating its defeat against the USA.

“They don’t want the government to use sport to normalize its murderous regime.”

“The Iranian people are out in the streets in Marivan celebrating the Islamic Republic’s loss to Team USA and chanting for freedom. So humiliating for #Iran’s regime.#MahsaAmini.”
