800-Year-Old Mummy Seized From Man Who Wanted To Show Off To Friends

Police have seized a mummified person in Peru after the man claimed they were in a relationship and kept it in a knapsack.

26-year-old Julio Cesar Bermejo claims he cared for the mummy named “Juanita” for 30 years after his father originally brought it home. According to Euronews, the mummy sleeps beside Bermejo in his bedroom, says he takes “great care of it,” and calls it his “spiritual girlfriend.”

However, researchers revealed that the mummy is a 45-year-old male and should be called “Juan” instead.

Additionally, it is believe that he is approximately 600-800 years old and found wrapped in bandages and in a fetal position. Peruvian police encountered the remains after spotting Bermejo with it in a public area.

Authorities also said he carried “Juanita” inside a food delivery bag from the company, PedidosYa, since Bermejo worked as a courier. The country’s Ministry of Culture took custody of the mummy in order to preserve and protect its heritage.

Social media reacts to the mummy finding and asks why he was walking with it in the first place.

After the story went viral, several people wondered why Bermejo waa walking around in public with “Juanita” and how he managed not to get caught.

The American Museum of Natural History says mummification began in Peru, starting more than 7,000 years ago “and allowed the living to remember, and remain connected with, the dead. Some people kept mummies in their homes or brought them to festivals. Others brought offerings of food or drink to their loved ones’ graves.”

Bermejo has denied trying to sell the mummy and said he wanted to show off to his friends after they requested to see it. His family purchased the mummy for 2,000 Peruvian.
