23-Year-Old Black Man Shot By Ohio Deputy, Not The Intended Target

An Ohio Deputy wrongfully shot and killed a 23-year-old black man identified as Casey Goodson Jr on December 4. He was right outside of his own home.

Police claim that they were looking for a separate suspect when they spotted a man who was reportedly waving a gun from his car. However, Casey was not the suspect, in fact he was coming home after a visit to the dentist’s office. He was shot in his back three times. The US Marshal later disclosed that Casey was not the suspect that they were looking for.

Columbus police revealed that the deputy is Jason Meade, a 17-year-veteran.

“Casey was 23 years old, he never had any type of crimes. He was good, he worked at the Gap, he loved his family,” Heather Johnson, a family friend, said to USA TODAY Network. “He just enjoyed being a big brother and enjoyed being with his family. He loved them very much.”

The U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio claimed that a fugitive task force had finished a search for a different suspect when they noticed Casey allegedly waving his gun at them. Once he was pulled over, they asked him to put away his gun and he apparently didn’t, which led to the shooting.

However, there is no evidence to back the police’s account up. Casey was walking to his door and his keys were even left in the lock.

Sean Walton, the family’s lawyer, said that the marshall’s statement claiming that the shooting was “justified,” was concerning.

“No investigation has been conducted, to our knowledge,” he said. “At that point they had not even began their investigation. So at the beginning of an investigation to say it’s justified. well tell us why it’s justified because at that point Casey was a law-abiding citizen entering his home after leaving an appointment with his dentist while carrying food.”

“Even hours after his death, the keys that he used to let himself in the house as he was shot and killed hung in the door – a reminder to his family of how close he was to safety.”

Goodson had a concealed carry license, but he was not waving his gun around. All he had in his hands was a Subway sandwich and Covid-19 mask.

The sheriff’s office does not have body cameras but claim that they are investigating the shooting.
