Philadelphia Police Department officials say that a gang of thieves broke into an unmarked trailer left in a Walmart parking lot in northeast Philadelphia on the 4300 block of Byberry Road. The incident is said to have happened around 6 a.m. on Thursday (April 13).

According to law enforcement officials, the trailer was carrying 15 pallets of dimes, estimated at about $750,000 in dimes ($50,000 per pallet), and the thieves ended up haphazardly making off with 5 pallets, so about 2 million dimes, worth $200,000.

Upon arriving to the scene, police said there were thousands of dimes scattered across the parking lot, and some had even spilled onto a nearby main street, identified as Woodhaven Road.

As for how the trailer full of coins ended up in Walmart parking lot, Philadelphia Police say that the driver of the semi-truck carrying the trailer first picked the coins up at the U.S. Mint facility located in Old City Philadelphia.

The driver was supposed to carry the coins to a mint in Miami, Florida, but he decided to leave the trailer in the parking lot and head home to get some rest before his hours-long trip down South. However, when the driver parked his big rig and trailer in the Walmart parking lot, upon returning to the truck on Thursday morning, he found the trailer door open and his big load tampered with and stolen.

Captain Jack Ryan of Northeast Detectives said, “This is common practice …to pick up a load going to Florida and go home for the night, get to sleep, and get on the road in the morning.”

Speaking on how the thieves left the area scattered with the stolen coins, Captain Ryan adds, “They were trying to cross-load the dimes into other things. There are dimes all over the parking lot.”
