A rare bottle of 1945 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has reportedly sold for $812,500, making it the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold at auction.
According to UPI, the bottle was sold by Acker Merrall & Condit during the La Paulée auction over the weekend. The wine was originally sourced from the personal cellar of Robert Drouhin, a respected figure in Burgundy’s wine industry.
The final sale price surpassed previous records and drew attention from collectors worldwide.
Why the 1945 Vintage Is So Valuable
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is considered one of the most prestigious wine producers in the world.
The 1945 vintage is particularly rare. Production that year was extremely limited. Additionally, wine experts note that the grapes were grown from pre-phylloxera vines, which are believed to produce wines with deeper complexity and distinctive character.
Acker chairman John Kapon described the bottle as exceptional. “I’ve had the privilege of tasting the 1945 Romanée-Conti just three times in my life, and it is the greatest wine I’ve ever tasted,” Kapon said in a statement.
Collectors often view the 1945 vintage as one of the finest ever produced by the estate.
Previous Record Now Surpassed
Before this sale, the record for the most expensive bottle of wine sold at auction stood at $558,000 in 2018.
This new sale significantly exceeded that benchmark.
The record-breaking transaction reflects continued global demand for ultra-rare wines, particularly those tied to historic vintages and limited production years.
Luxury wine auctions have increasingly attracted high-net-worth collectors seeking tangible, appreciating assets.
