A small commuter plane crashed in Alaska, killing all ten people on board and turning a routine flight into a tragedy. The aircraft vanished Thursday afternoon, and the wreckage was discovered on sea ice close to Nome on Friday.

According to the Associated Press, a Bering Air single-engine Cessna Caravan carrying nine passengers and a pilot departed Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. The plane flew through light fog and snow until officials lost contact with it less than an hour later. The U.S. Coast Guard launched a search after radar data showed the aircraft suffered a “rapid loss in elevation and speed” around 3:18 p.m. Rescuers in a helicopter spotted the wreckage on the ice and deployed two swimmers to investigate.
Although the plane carried an emergency locator transmitter, the plane didn’t send a distress signal. Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin McIntyre-Coble of the Coast Guard said in a statement that no alerts were received, leaving officials puzzled about what caused the sudden drop. Local, state, and federal officials confirmed all ten people on board crashed, and the victims’ names were not released.

This is the third major U.S. aviation disaster in over a week. On January 29, a commercial jetliner and Black Hawk Army helicopter collided near Washington, D.C., killing 67 people. Two days later, a medical transport plane carrying six passengers crashed in Philadelphia, killing six passengers and one person on the ground.
Authorities will now attempt to recover the victims and wreckage from the frozen sea ice and begin piecing together what went wrong.
