Zoe Kravitz regrets sharing her thoughts about the infamous Oscars slap Will Smith served Chris Rock back in March during the televised awards ceremony. As we all know, the “Suicide Squad” star, who went on to win Best Actor for his role in “King Richard,” was triggered by a joke Rock had made about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith’s buzz cut hair, after previously revealing she’s been battling alopecia since 2018.

As expected, the incident went viral on social media, with dozens of celebrities weighing in on Smith’s outburst. But the comments that appeared to have gotten the most attention were from Kravitz, who took to Instagram days after the fiasco to caption one of her photos, writing, “Here’s a picture of my dress at the show where we are apparently assaulting people on stage now.”

The “Batman” actress was met with a heap of criticism for her remark and has since responded to the backlash in a new interview with The Wall Street Journal. “I’m torn about what to say right now, because I’m supposed to just talk about it; I have very complicated feelings around it,” she retorted. “I wish I had handled that differently. And that’s okay. It’s a scary time to have an opinion or to say the wrong thing or to make controversial art or statements or thoughts or anything.”

Though Kravitz agrees that she didn’t necessarily handle the matter in the right way, she acknowledged that she’s an artist who should be entitled to express herself how she sees fit — particularly when it’s something as controversial as two A-list stars getting into a physical altercation.

Still, the Los Angeles native hoped that the caption she wrote following the incident, perhaps it had sparked a conversation for people to look at the situation from a different viewpoint, regardless of whether they agreed with her message or not.

“Being an artist is not about everybody loving you or everyone thinking you’re hot. It’s about expressing something that will hopefully spark a conversation or inspire people or make them feel seen,” she continued.

“I think I’m in a place right now where I don’t want to express myself through a caption or a tweet. I want to express myself through art.”
