On Thursday, Yusef Salaam briefly spoke on Trump’s indictememt in a Twitter post and tweeted: “For those asking about my statement on the indictment of Donald Trump—who never said sorry for calling for my execution—here it is: Karma.” After Salaam and four other members of the Exonerated 5 were wrongfully imprisoned for the 1989 rape of a woman in Central Park, Trump spent between $85,000 to $200,000 on a full page ad for the execution of the exonerated 5.

Mayor Koch has stated that hate and rancor should be removed from our hearts. I do not think so. I want to hate these muggers and murderers. They should be forced to suffer… Yes, Mayor Koch, I want to hate these murderers and I always will… How can our great society tolerate the continued brutalization of its citizens by crazed misfits?,” the ad said at the time.

The “Exonerated Five” (formerly known as the “Central Park Five”) are a group of Black and Latino men who were wrongfully convicted of the 1989 rape of a woman in New York City’s Central Park. The five men, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise, were between the ages of 14 and 16 at the time of their arrests and were coerced into giving false confessions by police.

After serving between six and 13 years in prison, the men were exonerated in 2002 when DNA evidence proved that another man, Matias Reyes, had committed the crime. The case is considered a stark example of the flaws in the American criminal justice system, particularly when it comes to the treatment of Black and Latino people.

Trump released a statement about the indictment on his platform Truth Social and called it an “attack on our country.

“These thugs and Radical Left Monsters have just INDICATED the the 45th president of the United States of America, and the leading Republican Candidate, by far, for the 2024 Nomination for president. THIS IS AN ATTACK ON OUR COUNTRY THE LIKES OF WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE. IT IS LIKEWISE A CONTINUING ATTACK ON OUR ONCE FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS. THE USA IS NOW A THIRD WORLD NATION, A NATION IN SERIOUS DECLINE. SO SAD!

They only brought this Fake, Corrupt, and Disgraceful Charge against me because I stand with the American People, and they know that I cannot get a fair trial in New York!
