Yelp To Begin Flagging Businesses Accused Of Racism

It looks like Yelp is taking a step in the right direction as they are to begin flagging businesses accused of racism or “racist behavior.” On Thursday (Oct. 8), an official blog post detailing the new warning went up on their site, written by VP of User Operations Noorie Malik.

Moving forward, users who browse the crowdsourced business review website and app will now be warned if restaurants, shops and other establishments listed have had instances of “racist behavior” or evidence of “egregious, racist actions from a business owner or employee.”

Examples include: racist conduct, such as using racist language or symbols. Additionally, to determine if an alert is warranted on a business’ page, Yelp will rely on, and link to, a credible media out and/or other news reports of alleged racist actions. Furthermore, the new policy arrives as the site pushes to confront discrimination and promote Black- and other minority-owned businesses. Data shows that review on the platform mentioning Black-owned businesses were up more then 617% this summer versus last.
