What Would You Have Done? Woman Gets Praised For Refusing To Give Up Her Train Seat To Elderly Passenger In Her 60s

A woman on Reddit is receiving a heap of positive support from people who think she made the right decision by refusing to give up her train seat for an elderly woman on a seven-hour train journey. According to the thread, the 32-year-old woman had pre-booked a seat from London to Scotland in the first-class section because she wanted to be able to continue working during her trip when she was suddenly approached by a woman believed to be in her 60s.

Because the train was fully booked, the elderly woman “quite rudely” suggested that the Reddit poster gives up her seat so that she could sit down — a request that she respectfully refused. “She pointed out that the train was full and there were no other seats. I apologized but reiterated that I’d booked the seat and wasn’t going to move.”

A train guard bizarrely asked if the woman in first class would consider sitting in standard class if they were to find her a seat, which the poster once again refused, stressing she was perfectly fine where she was. “I felt bad, but I also don’t think I needed to put myself in severe discomfort because someone else didn’t think ahead and reserve a seat.” Other Reddit users praised the woman for not moving, adding that she shouldn’t feel bad because the elderly passenger didn’t consider booking her seat ahead of time.

One user responded in the comment section, writing, “The train company are the a**holes here. They sold the disability seats as the most expensive seats on the train. Those seats should never be sold unless the occupier is disabled. That’s on the train operator. It’s not on you.”

Another added, “Without even looking, I knew you were female, as am I. Single female travelers are always asked to give up seats in such situations. Yes, I know that the elderly person was also female, but that doesn’t signify.

“It has happened to me so many times it makes me tired. Paid upgrade seats, early booking, early arrival mean nothing. You’re a girl in a seat I want? Get out.”

This incident echoes a similar situation which occurred in September when a man took to Reddit saying he, too, refused to get up out of his pre-booked seat in favor of another guest who hadn’t bothered to secure their seat ahead of time.
