The 29-year-old woman, identified as Zhang, was abandoned by her parents at the age of 2 since they couldn’t support her financially. Her father’s sister decided to raise Zhang and considers her aunt’s family her biological family since her parents decided not to keep in contact. After learning that Zhang used some of her savings to buy an apartment for her cousin, her biological parents reportedly demanded she buys her brother an apartment, as told by NextShark.

After refusing their demands, the couple filed a lawsuit against her for 500,000 yuan($71,000) and claimed she needed to pay for parental maintenance.

According to the Civil Code of China, adult children are legally obligated to support their parents regardless of their upbringing. A court ruled Zhang was not obligated to buy her brother an apartment, but she must negotiate the parental maintenance fee with her parents.

“Article 1107 An orphan or a child whose natural parents are incapable of raising him may be raised by the relatives or friends of his natural parents. The provisions of this Chapter shall not apply to the relationship between two persons one of whom is raised by the other.

Adult children are generally obliged to support their parents if they can no longer work or otherwise provide for their livelihood.”
The case caused outrage in China after the woman’s case was uploaded on the social media platform Weibo. Many felt the woman shouldn’t be forced to pay a maintenance fee since the couple abandoned her during childhood.  “It’s so lucky that Zhang didn’t grow up in her family of origin. Horrible!” one person wrote.

“I do support Zhang who declined the request, otherwise it would be another story of tragedy,”

“Don’t you feel guilty for not picking up your daughter or raising her? You should compensate your daughter for a suite,”
