Authorities apprehended the 72-year-old suspect on Tuesday evening in Mannheim, Germany and said she switched off the 79-year-old roommate’s ventilator because she was apparently “feeling disturbed by the noise.” Although hospital staff warned the woman that the machine was vital for her roommate, she switched it off later that evening.

“As a result, the 79-year-old patient became subject to resuscitation. Meanwhile, the woman is out of danger of death, but must continue to receive intensive care,” prosecutors said in a press statement. The Mannheim Public Prosecutor’s Office filed an arrest warrant and charged the woman with attempted manslaughter. She was brought before a judge on Wednesday.

Social media reacts to the woman’s actions and posted their experiences with ventaliators in hospitals

After the woman’s crime because a hot topic on social media, Twitter users began to describe their own experience being hospitalized while sharing a room with someone else. One user wrote, “I couldn’t sleep all night when I was in ICU because of the ventilator for the dude next to me, but I still never considered turning it off! All I did was break down in a panic attack the next morning.” Another user said their mother would’ve pulled the same stunt if she was in a similar situation while a male user joked that his wife gets annoyed by his breathing sometimes.

Some people called the unidentified woman a Karen for being too irritated by the noise and thought she could’ve been a bit more considerate towards her roomate’s condition. The hospital was also criticized for not switching the other patient to another room after the first attempt.

However, some people still sympathized with the woman and said they understood why she did it considering her age.

It is unknown when the woman will be convicted for the crime.
