Woman Left In Coma After Jumping Into Nearly-Boiling Yellowstone Hot Spring to Save Dog

A woman is currently fighting for her life after going above and beyond to save her pet.

Laiha Slayton, 20, was brought to the hospital on October 5 after she jumped into a 200-degree Yellowstone geyser at Maiden’s Grave Spring in Wyoming. She was trying to save her dog named Rusty, who sadly ended up dying. The dental assistant was horrifically burned and remains in a coma one week after four grueling surgeries.  According to the Daily Mail, she has burns to 90 percent of her body, half of which are third-degree, with the remainder second-degree.

Park officials shared what exactly happened: Her dog jumped out of a car and into the spring, and the woman went in after it. Her father was able to pull her from the thermal feature. However, the animal was pulled out but later died.

According to NBC News, more than 20 people have died after entering or falling into hot springs there.

Meanwhile, Slayton is expected to have more surgery to remove her dead skin and replace it with donor cadaver skin. It was said she may be taken out of her coma later this week if her procedures and recovery continue to go well.
