The woman, who remained anonymous, claims she has been feeding the local raccoons for decades. However, the raccoon population has reportedly surged in the past few weeks, with around twelve showing up every day for food. According to the New York Post, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies were reportedly surprised by the large number of raccoons on the woman’s property.

“Somehow, the word got out in raccoon land, and they all showed up at her house expecting a meal,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kevin McCarthy. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, although raccoons are known to carry diseases such as rabies and roundworm. The woman’s neighbors were also unhappy with the situation. One neighbor remembered having to take her dog to the vet after it had an altercation with one of the raccoons.

The sheriff’s office stated that the incident is a primary example of why feeding wildlife is heavily discouraged. “When animals have a reliable food source, they’ll keep coming back and, that’s what happened here,” said McCarthy.

Additionally, the woman reached out to a trapping organization to deal with the raccoons but said it costs $500 per raccoon removal and was advised to reach out to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for more help.
