Sumaya Thomas,18, made the false report on June 16, where she claimed that her abusive ex-boyfriend was outside her home and threatened her. She said to the dispatcher that he was sending her threatening text messages and mentioned that she was pregnant with his child. According to The Independent, Thomas said they had a tumultuous two-year relationship, and most of their interactions were over Snapchat.

An officer from the North Liberty Police Department responded to the call, arrived at Thomas’s residence, and observed a man departing the scene. The man, who had been communicating with Thomas for about a week after connecting on a dating app, was detained by the police for an hour while they investigated the claims. He cooperated with the officers and showed them text messages and app communications were connected to Thomas’s phone number.

During questioning, Thomas confessed to fabricating the entire scenario and explained that she had developed “cold feet” about meeting the man, deciding to go against the date. She further explained that she doubted the police would help her with a mere cancellation, which led to her to create a false narrative involving threats and abuse.

Thomas was arrested and charged with two counts of false reporting, both misdemeanors. She was subsequently released from the Johnson County Jail.
