Wisconsin Black Man Falsely Arrested By Police In Own Home Files Lawsuit

Keonte Furdge, a 23-year-old Wisconsin Black man who was falsely arrested by police in his own home, is now filing a federal lawsuit against the city of Monona. On June 2, Furdge and his friend, Toren Young, had moved into their new home.

While the place belongs to their high school football coach’s late mother, he gave them permission to stay there. However, prying neighbors, who didn’t know about the arrangement, ended up calling a non-emergency hotline to report suspicious activity at the home. Upon arrival, things escalated, leading to officers withdrawing their weapons and holding Furge at gunpoint in order to handcuff and arrest him; they’d believed he was robbing the house.

After phoning his coach to inform officers of the arrangement, he was released. Officers allegedly told him, “Sorry to ruffle your feathers,” and called the incident a “misunderstanding.” Well, because it was “more than a misunderstanding,” Furge filed a federal lawsuit on Monday (Sept. 21) against the city of Monona and two officers, Jared Wedig and Luke Wunsch. He is seeking unspecified damages over claims of unlawful entry, false arrest and detention, excessive force and failure to intervene.
