Will You Watch This? Documentary About Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl Show “Malfunction” In The Works
Socialites, get into this! FX and Hulu are gearing up to release a documentary about Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s 2004 Super Bowl halftime show scandal.
The new documentary titled Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson will premiere on the streaming platforms on November 19 at 10 p.m. ET. The Jodi Gomes-directed New York Times Presents film will focus on the “wardrobe malfunction” at the 2004 Super Bowl when Timberlake exposed Jackson’s breast during the live halftime show.
The film’s official synopsis says, “In 2004, a culture war was brewing when the Super Bowl halftime show audience saw a white man expose a Black woman’s breast for 9/16ths of a second. A national furor ensued. ‘If the culture wars could have a 9/11, it’s Feb. 1, 2004,’ said one observer. The woman was Janet Jackson, and her career was never the same. The man was Justin Timberlake; his stardom only grew. The New York Times examines the racial and cultural currents that collided on the Super Bowl stage, and explores how the incident impacted one of the most successful pop musicians in history.”

Earlier this year, the “Cry Me a River” singer actually apologized. Not only to Jackson but also Britney Spears after the release of “Framing Britney Spears.” His apology read, “I care for and respect these women and I know I failed.”
“Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson” comes shortly after the NYT’s “Framing Britney Spears” and “Controlling Britney Spears” episodes.
