Will You Let Your Kids Get It? FDA Authorizes First Covid-19 Booster Shot For Teens Aged 12 To 15

This Monday, the Food and Drug Administration has authorized the use of a Pfizer-BioNTech booster in kids from ages 12 to 15 years old.

ERFURT, GERMANY – SEPTEMBER 15: Medical Staff prepares a vial of the Pfizer/BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine against Covid-19 at a vaccination center on September 15, 2021 in Erfurt, Germany. Booster vaccinations, which are an additional vaccination shot given to strengthen an existing full vaccination, are underway across Germany for elderly patients who were among the first to receive shots in the initial vaccine rollout. The FDA also said it would now allow children as young as 5 with compromised immune systems to get an additional shot. In addition to this, the agency shortened the amount of time between a person’s second dose of the Pfizer vaccine and being eligible for a booster to five months instead of six months. This goes for all age groups, CBS notes.

Dr. Peter Marks, the FDA’s top vaccines official said “Based on the FDA’s assessment of currently available data, a booster dose of the currently authorized vaccines may help provide better protection.”

“With this in mind, the FDA has extended the range of individuals eligible to receive a booster, shortened the length of time between the completion of the Pfizer primary series for individuals to receive a booster, and is authorizing a third protective vaccine dose for some of our youngest and most vulnerable individuals.”
