The family of Yvette Hoffman, the wife of Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman, say she used her body as a “shield” to protect her daughter from bullets in their targeted shooting.
As we previously shared on social media, Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman, 55, and her husband Mark Hortman, 58, were targeted and killed early Saturday (June 14) in their Brooklyn Park home.
Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman, 60, and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, were also targeted and wounded about 5 miles away in their Champlin home. Police and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed the shootings were part of a politically motivated attack. Officials say Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman were targeted because they were public servants. Meanwhile, their spouses were targeted because they loved them.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office said the Hortmans each died from multiple gunshot wounds. Rep. Hortman was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband died at North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale. Hortman, who left behind two children, was a member of the Democratic Party and represented Minnesota House District 34B.
When officers arrived at the Hortmans’ home, they were met with gunfire from the suspect dressed as a police officer. The suspect was soon identified as Vance Boelter. Police took him into custody on Sunday evening (June 15).

Meanwhile, John Hoffman, also a Democrat, represents Minnesota Senate District 34. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, have one daughter. A family member said Yvette shielded her daughter from the gunman. The Hoffman’s nephew said during the shooting, Yvette jumped on their adult daughter, Hope Hoffman, to shield her from the bullets. Hope Hoffman was unharmed while her parents John and Yvette, were shot multiple times.
Following his arrest, officials said the suspect had a manifesto with 50 to 70 names. They said the manifesto looked like an apparent hit list of abortion rights supports. I included lawmakers, doctors, and Planned Parenthood officials past and present. The list also reportedly included former Planned Parenthood executive and now U.S. Senator Tina Smith. Officials also said the suspect visited the home of four state lawmakers on the night of fatal shootings. They said he had intent to kill all of them.
