31-year-old Sophia Hartman had her 6-year-old adopted daughter wear leg braces and undergo surgeries to have a feeding tube installed and another to flush out her intestines. Investigators from the Seattle Police Department added that the child had more than 470 medical treatments and Hartman also requested an implant to be surgically inserted to suppress early signs of puberty.
According to the New York Post, Hartman told KING 5 in 2019 that she adopted two sisters from Zambia and claimed one of them had a neurological disorder called alternating hemiplegia of childhood. She is now facing charges of second-degree assault on a child and attempted assault of a child.

A Feb.19 letter that was sent by Seattle Children’s hospital director Rebbecca Wiester documented Hartman’s frequent visits to the hospital and C.H.(the girl’s initials) underwent a two-week observation treatment after the letter prompted an investigation by the Department of Children and Youth. Additionally, Hartman’s internet searches included picking out funeral songs and “how to get paid to take care of a family member with a disability.”
She also submitted C.H.’s “case” to the Make A Wish Foundation in 2019. After learning about the child’s latest update, the philanthropic company said they were shocked by the allegations.
“This is a very serious allegation and any threat to the wellbeing of a child is not in alignment with the child-centered focus of our mission. We hope this matter is quickly remedied in the best interest of the child.”
