The white male student who was caught on camera attacking 15-year-old Brey while hurling slurs on November 15 has been charged with a felony.

A statement from the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the 15-year-old male student was charged with unlawfully, feloniously, and knowingly causing great bodily harm to another person or disfigurement of another person. According to KCTV5, the alleged attack is categorized as a level 4 felony. As previously reported, Brey, a black female student at Shawnee Mission East, was injured after the male student aggressively confronted her while hurling racial slurs.
The Kansas City Defender first reported the video and story, claiming that Bre had been speaking to another white student who was also using racial insults and referring to other Black students as slaves. Following the talk, the male student approached Bre before attacking her, and other students stated that the school has a history of racism and that school administrators have done little to address the issue. Bre sustained a broken nose after the attack and was suspended from school for five days, while her assailant was only suspended for three days.

Students have organized a walkout to speak out against the ongoing injustices they face since administrators have reportedly failed to implement any changes to ensure that all students feel safe on campus. The Black Student Solidarity Network, a coalition of Black students from Missouri and Kansas, led the walkout.
The students are asking administrators to meet the following demands to ensure the safety of all students at Shawnee Mission East: a formal apology and admission of wrongdoing, immediate expulsion of Brey’s attacker, revising their zero-tolerance policy, and mandatory cultural competency training for administrators. Additionally, they are asking for the implementation of SURJ-KC’s 2020 recommendations and transparent accountability measures.
