The shooting took place at a birthday-graduation party at a home in Charleston when Dennis Butler,37, took out the rifle around 10:45 p.m. According to the Charleston Police Department, Butler was issued a warning about speeding in the apartment complex earlier that day since children were present and playing around in the area where the party was taking place. Moments later, Butler arrived back at the property and started firing his weapon. However, the unidentified woman pulled out her registered pistol and fatally shot Charleston.

Charleston PD Chief of Detectives Tony Hazelette said during a press conference that the woman “saved several lives” last night and cooperated with police officers. Officers didn’t file any charges for the shooting.

As reported by WSAZ, Butler had an extensive criminal history prior to the shooting.

After news of the vase was released, the woman was hailed as a hero due to her swift action in taking down Butler as the situation could’ve potentially become more dangerous for everyone involved.

The case is being investigated by the Kanawha County Prosecutor’s Office.

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin previously said in a statement that he was planning to change his stance regarding gun laws after the deadly mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Shooter Salvador Ramos used a similar semi-automatic rifle to kill the victims.

He also said he couldn’t stop thinking about his grandchildren once learning about the shooting that resulted in the death of 19 children and two adults.

“I’ve never been in this frame of mind, I can’t get my grandchildren out of my mind,”

Manchin expressed similar thoughts in 2018 after the Parkland shooting in Florida.
