Wendy’s CEO Speaks Out After Atlanta Restaurant Goes Up In Flames During Protest For Rayshard Brooks
During a protest for Rayshard Brooks, Wendy’s restaurant, where the man was killed by an officer went up in flames. No one was injured. However, local authorities are now on the hunt for the person behind the crime.
Wendy’s president and CEO Todd Penegor is now speaking out, saying the events that happened over the weekend in Atlanta were “heartbreaking” in a letter to employees and franchisees.
“The tragic death of Rayshard Brooks, and the pain this has caused, saddens us all,” Penegor said. “Wendy’s has proudly served the Atlanta community for decades and seeing our restaurant burn was difficult, but we are extremely grateful that all of the team members remained safe.” Penegor said in his statement that the franchise owner is ensuring that employees will continue to be paid and have the option to remain employed at other restaurants.
“Wendy’s is also making funds available through WeCare, our employee assistance program, to any restaurant team member in our system who may experience a financial loss due to short-term restaurant closures or disruptions,” he said. “As we’ve communicated previously, Wendy’s is committed to doing our part to make real change by supporting our employees and the Black community through social justice, youth and education efforts.”
Brooks was killed on Friday night after cops confronted him for sleeping in his car in the drive-thru line of Wendy’s. After getting out of his vehicle to speak with the cops, he was shot and killed after trying to run from them. The encounter was captured on camera.
Officer Garrett Rolfe was fired over the weekend.
