In a Georgia courtroom that could’ve easily been heavy with nothing but pain and anger, widow Regina Johnson shocked everyone with a strong act of grace… hugging the man convicted of taking her husband’s life in a tragic hit-and-run.
Instead of letting bitterness take root, Regina wrapped her arms around Joseph Tillman, the man responsible for the death of her beloved Chuck Johnson, and showed the world what forgiveness in its rawest form truly looks like.

It was Regina’s faith that led her straight into that moment. Tillman, who was under the influence of nitrous oxide when he struck 78-year-old Chuck riding his electric bike, stood before her facing a long list of charges — homicide by vehicle, DUI, and reckless driving. And yet, when their eyes met, she leaned in, held him, and quietly whispered that she forgive hims and “God loves you.” Whew!
In that moment, the tension in the courtroom shifted. Tillman, visibly shaken, broke down and replied, “I pray that you hear my heart when I say I am truly, completely sorry.” Even the judge, who’s seen just about every kind of case, admitted, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen the wife of a victim hug the defendant where they killed somebody.”
Justice With Compassion
Tillman ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years. However, the sentence allows for his prison time to be suspended if he completes a two-year inpatient rehabilitation program.
Love That Lasts a Lifetime
Regina and Chuck had been married for over 50 years — a lifetime of memories, love, and partnership. Losing him in such a senseless way could’ve fueled nothing but anger. Instead, she chose empathy. She revealed that the hug wasn’t just a spontaneous gesture — it was something she felt divinely instructed to do. “God told me he needed a mom hug,” she explained. “Joey doesn’t yet realize how deeply God loves him. He needs healing from his past, just like all of us do. That is our heart and prayer.”
