Election Day proved to be disappointing for the Democratic Party, as Vice President Kamala Harris lost her bid for the presidency to President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday, November 5. This marked the end of her strong campaign fight for a seat in the White House.

On Wednesday, Harris returned to her alma mater, Howard University, where she addressed a nation dealing with division and stressed the importance of moving forward together while respecting the peaceful transfer of power.
“Now, I know folks are feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now,” Harris began. “I get it, but we must accept the results of this election. Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. I also told him that we will help him and his team with their transition, and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.”
She continued, “While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign—the fight: the fight for freedom, for opportunity, for fairness, and the dignity of all people. A fight for the ideals at the heart of our nation, the ideals that reflect America at our best. That is a fight I will never give up.”

Although this was not the speech that students and attendees at the university had hoped to hear, many felt inspired and motivated by her historic run. They are now sharing words of encouragement in response to the Vice President. Here’s what some had to say:

Donald Trump has not yet released a statement following Kamala Harris’s peaceful call for transition. However, earlier in the week, he did deliver a victory speech. He stated early Wednesday morning,
“Every single day, I will be fighting for you, and with every breath in my body, I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve. This will truly be the golden age of America. That’s what we have to have.”
Donald Trump will be sworn in at his inauguration which is usually always held on Jan. 20, as specified by the Constitution’s 20th Amendment.
