Volcano Erupts In Indonesia, Thousands Evacuated To Safety

Over 2,700 people were forced to evacuate from their homes after a volcano erupted in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia.

Metro News reported that the eruption occurred from the Mt. IIe Lewotolok volcano and the event caused residents to immediately seek refuge. The country has more than 130 active volcanoes and apparently, it can take months before an eruption can occur.

Disaster Mitigation spokeswoman Raditya Jati said in a statement that approximately 2,780 people from 26 villages have left their homes and no deaths have been reported so far. The country’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center said the area is likely to be covered with poisonous gas, lava streams, and other dangerous factors.

The head of the Center said the volcano’s status has been raised to the country’s four-tier alert system due to the increasing threat. Earlier this month, the Merapi volcano erupted which a similar threat level.
