Virginia School District Cancels Dr.Seuss Books For Racial Undertones

The Loudon County Public School District has reportedly canceled Dr. Seuss’s books for racial undertones, promoting anti-blackness and white supremacy.

On March 2, Dr. Suess’s birthday is recognized across many schools nationwide as “Read Across America Day”, a day where educators acknowledge the importance of reading and literacy. However, the school district says they are no longer celebrating the author’s birthday due to the racial undertones in his illustrations and writings.

“Realizing that many schools continue to celebrate ‘Read Across America Day’ in partial recognition of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, it is important for us to be cognizant of research that may challenge our practice in this regard. As we become more culturally responsive and racially conscious, all building leaders should know that in recent years there has been research revealing radical undertones in the books written and the illustrations drawn by Dr. Seuss,

The decision comes after organizers from the Learning for Justice advocacy group cited a source where Dr. Seuss’s books promoted “orientalism, anti-Blackness, and White supremacy” for years. However, the books are not completely banned from the school district, students are still allowed to read the books.

Dr. Seuss is a prolific children’s book author and global icon. And Dr. Seuss has a history of racial baggage that educators should understand when introducing his writing to their students.”
