Virginia Pastor Who Held Church Service Amid Pandemic Dies Of COVID-19

An evangelical pastor who held church services despite warnings about social gatherings with more than ten people has died from COVID-19.

The New York Post reports Bishop Gerald O. Glenn held church services at the New Deliverance Evangelistic Church in Richmond and his last in-person service was held on March 22. He said during the service that he is “essential” due to his work as a preacher and promised to keep his church open.

On Sunday, it was announced by the church that he died a week after his diagnosis of COVID-19:

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Bishop Gerald O. Glenn, the Founder, and Pastor of New Deliverance Evangelistic Church on Saturday, April 11, 2020, at 9:00 PM.”

The first lady of the church, Marcietia Glenn, was also diagnosed with COVID-19. Their daughter, Mar-Gerie Crawley, says her father ignored his symptoms due to a pre-existing condition and is urging everyone to stay home.

“It becomes very real to you. I just beg people to understand the severity and the seriousness of this, because people are saying it’s not just about us, it’s about everyone around us.”
