On Tuesday, the seafood menu was uploaded on Facebook before it was quickly taken down after residents criticized the insensitive nature of its theme and food items. ‘Remember-tini,’ ‘Never Forget Sampler,’ ‘9-11 Oysters,’ ‘Freedom Flounder,’ ‘2977 Chowder,’ and ‘First Responder Flatbread’ were the food choices. After the public outcry, George White, manager at the Clubhouse at Aquia Harbour, said the menu was created to bring attention to September 11 and honor those who died in the attacks.

“I apologize for those I offended with the 9/11 seafood Sunday post. My intention was to bring attention to that horrific day 21 years ago. To honor those who lost so much as well as those who gave everything that day. We will have a new theme tomorrow.”

After the statement, the menu theme food item names were changed to a football theme. ‘Champs Chowder,’ ‘Fumble Flounder,’ and ‘Hot Defense’ crab dip.

Social media reacted to the 9/11 menu and had mixed reactions to the names.

After the menu was uploaded on Twitter, the general opinion was that people didn’t agree with the names and overall theme.

Last year, a couple faced backlash after hosting a 9/11-themed wedding when a Reddit user uploaded an image of a koozie that said, “Never forget 9 11 21.” Although the couple’s names were unknown, Redditors were disgusted by the theme and called the idea “revolting.”

911 theme for wedding

“Some wedding venues offer discounted rates on this date, for the obvious reason. I don’t think getting married on 9/11 is inherently insensitive, but making your wedding 9/11 themed definitely is,” one user wrote.

“Was out to watch/shoot the memorial lights go up and there were several engagement/ wedding photos going around. Like I completely understand that these would normally be great spots for photos as they are very scenic in Brooklyn, however today was not the day to do it. Plus there was about 100 photographers there already set up for hours and you come in and just mess up their shots.”

“wait for them to get a divorce, get married on the anniversary of it, put their divorce info on a koozie and pass them out. They’re gonna love it.”
