Authorities Confirm Fatal Crash on Angeles Crest Highway
Video game developer Vince Zampella, a longtime executive in the gaming industry, died following a car crash on Southern California’s Angeles Crest Highway, according to NBC4 Investigates.
The single-vehicle crash was reported at approximately 12:45 p.m. Sunday on the scenic roadway located north of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains. The California Highway Patrol said the southbound vehicle left the roadway and struck a concrete barrier.
A passenger was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Authorities told NBC4 Investigates that the driver became trapped inside the car, which later caught fire. The driver died at the scene, while the passenger was transported to a hospital, where they later died from their injuries.
At this time, officials have not released details regarding what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Zampella’s Role in Shaping Modern Video Games
Vince Zampella was a prominent figure in the video game industry and served as the head of Respawn Entertainment. Before founding Respawn, Zampella was the CEO of Infinity Ward, the studio behind the Call of Duty franchise.
Infinity Ward developed several early titles in the Call of Duty series, which went on to become one of the highest-selling video game franchises in history. Zampella’s leadership at the studio played a significant role in the franchise’s early success.
In 2010, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment in Chatsworth, California. The studio later became known for developing several successful titles across multiple gaming platforms.
Respawn Entertainment and EA Acquisition
Respawn Entertainment was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2017. Following the acquisition, the studio released several major titles, including Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
Zampella also oversaw an EA studio team based in Playa Vista, which worked on the Battlefield franchise. His role involved supervising development efforts across multiple high-profile projects under the EA umbrella.
At the time of his death, Zampella was 55 years old.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. As of now, no additional information has been released regarding contributing factors or whether speed, weather, or mechanical issues played a role.
