The director of Maria Montessori Academy, Micah Hirokawa, posted on the school’s Facebook page that he sent a letter home to parents about the option to opt-out of Black History Month activities on Friday. According to MSN, he says families have the right “to exercise their civil rights to not participate in Black History Month at the school.”
Hirokawa did not disclose how many parents wanted their children to opt-out of the curriculum. The K-12 school has an enrollment of 322 students and there are only three Black children in the entire school.

“We should not shield our children from the history of our Nation, the mistreatment of its African American citizens, and the bravery of civil rights leaders, but should educate them about it,” Hirokawa added. He expressed that the decision to send out the letter goes against his beliefs and how children should learn about the injustices people of color deal with in the United States. The school district has yet to comment on the letter.
