27-year-old Brandon Wilson of Buffalo was caught by Customs and Border Protection agents and explained that he ended up on the border between the two countries by incident. He also stated some of the packages belonged to his mother although he couldn’t verify why the names on the packages and envelopes didn’t match.
Wilson later confessed during an interview with the Postal Service Inspection General that he started to steal mail from his route and place it in the back of his personal vehicle.

“Beginning in September 2020, Wilson estimated he placed mail from his delivery routes into the trunk of his vehicle on more than four but less than 10 instances after returning to the post office from his assigned route. Wilson intended to whittle down the amount of mail in the trunk of his vehicle by placing a small amount of the mail into USPS missort containers in the morning before his shift began. Wilson last reintroduced mailings into the mail stream in this fashion approximately three weeks prior [to] the date of the interview.”
However, Wilson has denied having any knowledge that there were absentee ballots among the pieces of stolen mail. He was charged with delaying or destroying mail and faces five years in prison along with a $250,000 fine if convicted.
